This Week’s VR Game Roundup — Steal the Puck, Scan the Code, and Dodge the Wall!

Hockey Player VR

You’ve always wanted to be a hockey player, but your parents paid too much for your braces. Or maybe your lack of skill had something to do with it. Whatever the reason, Hockey Player VR is here to fix your dilemma by letting you take to the virtual ice rink. You can soar down the ice and take careful shots at the goalie, or steal the puck from your opponent. The game also supports cross-platform multiplayer so you can enjoy it with friends.

Fitness Potential

Hockey Player VR is a room-scale VR experience that makes use of tracked motion controllers. You must swing your arms from side to side as you hold a virtual stick. You can also do this to fire the puck, or steal it from an opponent, and there are four training modes to help get you up to speed. The game promises “realistic physics,” which could potentially help you if you ever play real hockey.

Tag War

We can pretty much guarantee you’ve never played anything like Tag War, because it’s a very weird idea for a game. Part first-person shooter and part shopping simulator, you take on your friends with the goal of scanning more bar codes than they can. Up to eight people can participate in an online battle, and you have to get very close to scan items.

Fitness Potential

Because you’re in a race to scan the most objects in Tag War, you’ll be using your controllers as you frantically swing your arms around. Items are located at all different heights, requiring you to raise and lower your arms as you scan them. You can also equip weapons and even raise a shield with your other hand to protect yourself from enemies. You can even use scoped weapons to snipe” them from afar, requiring careful balance.

Beatcrash

There are a ton of different VR rhythm games releasing each week. However, Beatcrash separates itself by integrating its virtual environments into the gameplay. As the music begins, you’re tasked with destroying incoming projectiles to the beat. Based on the setting you choose, it might be flying meteorites, stars from the sky, or casino chips. Gorgeous visuals and bumping tunes with keep you entertained through it all.

Fitness Potential

Beatcrash was designed with fitness in mind, and it can be set to use your own MP3 files for a more personalized workout. You must swing your arms to the rhythm to destroy objects, and you can occasionally wield weapons to help you do so. Depending on your fitness setup, you can play the game sitting, standing, or in a room-scale setting.

VR Health Care (Running Exercise)

Credit to: Thoth Technology

If getting on the treadmill and playing some music isn’t enough to immerse you in your workout, then VR Health Care (Running Exercise) might just be what you need. Designed to work with the Vive motion tracker or a motion controller, you run on your treadmill and collect coins in a variety of colorful environments. You might even encounter hazardous weather!

Fitness Potential

As a game designed to run while you are working out on the treadmill, VR Health Care (Running Exercise) is undoubtedly a fitness tool. You’ll still be the one doing all the running, but having a tangible reward to collect in the game should give you the edge you need. Collecting that last coin could be what you need to get over that hump and push through. You can also run  in place and shake a tracked motion controller to use it.

Dodge the Wall

Based on goofy game shows involving real people attempting to fit through holes in wall, Dodge the Wall is a body-contorting VR game. The goal is simple – get your body through the hole before the wall runs into you. In practice, of course, that isn’t so easy, and you’re sure to look very silly as you do it.

Fitness Potential

The walls you see will all be different and the difficulty will gradually make it more challenging. The game encourages you to pass the headset between friends, so you can all work up a sweat as you attempt to get a high score. Just don’t trip over each other during your trials!

Developer/Publisher: Space Dog XR

Release Date: May 4, 2019

Compatible With: Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Windows Mixed Reality
