This Week’s VR Game Roundup: Frisbee Golf, A Boxing Trainer & More

During last week’s VR Game Roundup, we saw a surprisingly stacked week with REAKT Performance Trainer coming out, GORN getting ported to the Oculus Quest, and a cool drumming experience release on the Oculus Rift. However, we’re back to a slower week again as there aren’t too many big name releases to start February. This week’s most notable virtual reality releases are a free frisbee golf title for Oculus Rift, a virtual reality version of Minesweeper, and a boxing trainer called Boom Dojo.

Flip City

Kicking off this week’s VR Game Roundup is Flip City. This Oculus Rift game promises the world’s largest (virtual) frisbee golf course. There are two different worlds to check out and there are even bonus rounds. The first world is The Grid, which is a Tron-like world that has you battling enemies while getting around to your objectives. The other world is a fantasy-world called Cemetery Gates. While it’s not a simulation (and there are other frisbee golf games for that), this looks to be quite the unque spin on the hobby.

Fitness Potential

You will keep one of your arms active while playing Flip City, but this isn’t the best workout game. It is a bit more active than the simulation frisbee golf titles, but the pastime simply isn’t the greatest way to exercise, especially in a virtual setting.

Catan VR

The classic tabletop board game Catan is now available on the Oculus Quest. Previously out on other VR platforms, this solid port of Catan takes the immersion to the next level and is a great way to play it online. It features cross-platform play for the Oculus Rift, Oculus Go, and Quest. There are also computer opponents to go up against as well, if you are just learning to play or would rather brush up on your skills solo.

Fitness Potential

While Catan won’t leave you drenched in your own sweat, it’s a thrilling strategy game. Those looking for a competitive mental challenge can’t go wrong by picking up Catan VR. The port has been highly regarded by fans and is an excellent VR conversion. A perfect way to have a board game night with some friends during lockdown.

Boom Dojo

The best workout game this week is Boom Dojo, which released just after our VR Game Roundup went live last week. It’s a procedurally generated boxing trainer that generates levels based off your own music. You will aim to get high scores, which means matching color targets to your hands and getting out of the way of oncoming bars that cause damage.

Fitness Potential

While it clearly is an arm workout first and foremost, Boom Dojo will also make sure you are moving your body as well. Good punches come from the hips and dodging out of the way of bars will make sure you are never too stationary. Overall, this should make for a solid full-body workout and there are all the trappings of a highly replayable high score-based title.

Developer/Publisher: Yolopia Ltd

Release Date: January 29, 2021

Compatible With: Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality

Price: $5.99 ($9.99)

SweeperVR

Wrapping up this week’s offerings is SweeperVR. As you can probably guess, this is a VR version of Minesweeper, the great logic game that comes with Windows computers that has players determining where mines are and then safely flagging them. Turning Minesweeper into a 3D experience really reinvents the challenge, so this will offer up a fresh challenge for even the most experienced of players.

Fitness Potential

Of course, SweeperVR isn’t going to be a title that gets you sweating. Similar to Catan VR, this will give your mind a workout rather than your body and it’s s a game that makes you think as you rotate the minefield looking for mines. There are several preset difficulties to choose from and the game is fully customizable, so you can make sure you are getting an appropriate amount of challenge from it as well.
