The Week’s VR Game Roundup — Dance to the Beat, Swordfight, and Catch Fish

Real Fishing VR

Fishing is a relaxing activity, but who said you can’t also get a workout while you try to nab the biggest catch possible? There are 100 different stages to try out, with classic fishing gameplay that feels right at home with the tracked motion controllers. You can even take the fish you caught and put them in an aquarium instead of chowing down!

Fitness Potential

As a classic fishing game, Real Fishing VR lets you draw your line back and cast it into the sea. You’ll then use your other hand to wind the line back to your boat after getting a bite. You can then jerk the line back as you get closer to keep the fish from fighting and breaking it. Bigger fish require more precise “strikes” as you attempt to pull them in, as well.

Developer/Publisher: Funnypack

Release Date: March 5, 2019

Compatible With: HTC Vive,  Windows Mixed Reality

Price: $7.79 to $12.99

Puzzle Out VR

Puzzle games can be some of the most intense virtual reality experiences, particularly if they are on a timer that will result in your virtual character failing. In Puzzle Out VR, you must bypass an alien wall that stops you from viewing collected Marian crystals. Alongside the puzzle gameplay, you can see the space environment outside the ship, including Earth itself.

Fitness Potential

You have to move quickly while playing Puzzle Out VR. It’s a room-scale game that makes use of tracked motion controllers. You’ll use these to quickly pick up puzzle pieces and stick them in the alien wall. The faster you can do this, the more you’ll succeed, and you can destroy crystals to stop the wall from moving.

Developer/Publisher: Glock Software

Release Date: March 5, 2019

Compatible With: Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Windows Mixed Reality

What if humanity was no longer the most evolved species on Earth? In Quantum Legend – released in early access – humans have modified themselves enough to classify “cyborgs” as their own species. War resulted, with the two sides also battling full robots, and in the game’s “survival” mode, it’s up to you to destroy your enemies with two included weapons.

Fitness Potential

The included survival mode is very fast-paced, requiring you to quickly move the tracked motion controllers. Enemies are varied, with some being much larger than you and requiring quickly aiming up. You’ll also need to quickly shoot up to destroy incoming rockets. More  content will be added in the future, which should give you a more varied physical experience, as well.

Developer/Publisher: FlyDream Interactive

Release Date: March 3, 2019

Compatible With: Oculus Rift, Oculus Rift DK2, HTC Vive

Price: Free

Shadow Legend VR

Virtual reality games don’t tend to be the longest on the market, and very few are full role-playing games. One title to buck that trend is Shadow Legend VR, a full-scale RPG that puts you in the boots of a Templar knight during medieval times. It combines swordplay with axes and bows, alongside a parrying  system so you can truly feel like a legendary warrior defending your realm from danger.

Fitness Potential

Shadow Legend VR features numerous ways to get you moving. The parrying system and sword combat require you to swing and block with the tracked motion controllers. The boss fights also require you to be quick, and there are multiple movement settings for those who might typically get nauseous from VR games.

Developer/Publisher: VitruviusVR

Release Date: March 7, 2019

Compatible With: HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality

Price: $24.99

Audica

Harmonix, the developer responsible for bringing music games into the mainstream, is back with Audica. The virtual reality rhythm game has you shooting and smashing targets in time to the music you’re hearing, almost like a form of dance. The closer you are to the beat, the better your score will be. Multiple difficulty levels are also included, as well as a leaderboard.

Fitness Potential

Audica is all about your movement, but in how fast you can swing your arms and if you can do it with precision. This means that the game will not only test your endurance, but your posture and balance. It can be played seated, but the standing experience will give you more range of motion during tougher songs.

Developer/Publisher: Harmonix Music Systems, Inc

Release Date: March 7, 2019

Compatible With: HTC Vive, Oculus Rift

Price: $19.99
