New Releases: This Week in VR Fitness Games 11/6/17

Run and shoot beasts, fight mythological beings, destroy some mechs, and play mini-golf with this week's new VR releases.

PlayStation VR Demo Disc 2

PlayStation just released a VR gaming bundle! You’ll get 13 games ranging from adventure, rhythm, rail shooter, racing, and action games. Raw Data (Survios), unlike the other games, will have you standing and shooting waves of robotic enemies to fight a huge corporation. Shoot various weapons, squat to avoid getting hit, and save the world by collecting data files after each mission.

Fitness Potential

Raw Data is a first-person VR shooter that has a storyline but gets your heart pumping from having to maneuver around, shoot, and hide behind things. Sure, you’ll be moving around using your touch controller to teleport, but you could do some jogging in place or some extra squats during any downtime. Making purposeful fighting movements with a gun or sword and having proper foot placement can also improve your fitness experience.

Developer/Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment

Release Date: November 8, 2017

Compatible with: PlayStation VR with tracked controllers

创世-修真录

You’re fighting against mythological evils for the glory of immortality. In this early access game, you will be using various attacks involving swords, fire, crystals, meteorites, and casting abilities. Currently, the game is only in Chinese and the devs are working on the English translation.

Fitness Potential

This is an upper body focused game but can have elements of cardio if you jog or run in place. Adding hand weights, ankle weights, or a vest can add a strength training element to this fighting game. Developers could make enemy challengers and bosses quicker to react or add difficulty settings for this game to boost its exercise potential. Right now, it seems like it’d be fun to play but not super intense like you’d expect from mythological opponents.

Release Date: November 7, 2017

Compatible with: HTC Vive with tracked controllers

Price: Free

Adventure Golf VR

This is a great game to play with your kids, friends, or anyone who wants to try VR for the first time. This is a low impact and low-stress game where you’ll play miniature golf across 3 themes: Sci-fi, Prehistoric, and Fantasy. You’ll have a chance to aim and putt through 27 holes with differing landscape challenges like windmills and curves.

Fitness Potential

Play mini-golf during your next family game night. There’s dinosaurs, wild plants, fun challenges, and surprises across maps. This is not a cardio or strength game by any means, but it is a great game to get kids off the couch. We recommend playing this game as well as parent approved VR games like #Archery, Hoops VR, and Arcade Saga to motivate kids and teens to play games and stay active.

Developer/Publisher: Skydome Studios

Release Date: November 7, 2017

Compatible with: HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, with tracked controllers

Price: $8.49 to $9.99

Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE

Based on Serious Sam’s First and Second Encounter and The Last Hope — BFE is a VR gamers most promising intense and action-packed first-person shooter. The locomotion settings of this game are so versatile you’ll have the option to sit, stand, or move in real life to move in the game. You can play solo, multiplayer, and in co-op mode with non-VR gamers. Which other VR shooter games can do all that?

Fitness Potential

The locomotion settings make this game adaptable (blink, teleport, walk/jog) to almost every type of movement style. Being free to move or jog in a game like Serious Sam will elevate your heart rate and have you sweating in no time. Play the Frantic Arcade mode for an endless wave of bad guys, capture the flag to see who’s fastest, or get a team together to face off against other players.
