Best Free VR Fitness Games of 2020

While it might be true that the best things in life are free, that isn’t typically the case for virtual reality titles. A lot of free games are more like tech demos than fleshed-out experiences and don’t have a lot to offer. However, players will still get plenty out of the best free VR fitness games as they show that price doesn’t always indicate a quality experience. Whether you’re on a budget or just want to check out some new titles to play, we recommend checking out these free titles. After all, even if they aren’t the right fit for you it will have just taken up a few minutes of your time rather than a chunk out of your wallet.

After you have tried out all of the free titles and want some additional recommendations for all VR platforms, check out our list of the 25 best VR fitness games 2019.

Aliens Attack VR is a really enjoyable first-person shooter that was developed for the Polytechnical University of Catalonia and is free as a result. The quick shooter has the player moving around to get into proper shooting position and regularly moving both arms as they dual-wield guns. As players try to defend against multiple waves of aliens they’ll be burning off calories as well.

Aliens Attack VR is available now for free on Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality.

A wonderful virtual reality playroom, the Angelus Brand VR Experience has several ways to burn some calories. Playing basketball with paint bottles provides a solid arm workout while  the obstacle run will have players squatting out of the way of obstacles. Even though it wasn’t designed with fitness in mind, it still manages to provide an active experience.

Angelus Brand VR Experience is available now for free on Valve Index and HTC Vive.

The free half of Echo VR, Echo Arena is a team-based multiplayer game. In it, players get to move their bodies through a zero-gravity environment as they attempt to score goals in this virtual sport. It winds up being a lot of fun, and it becomes quite active as players glide through the air and punch opponents. If you enjoy what you experience, Echo Combat (which is an objective-based title featuring weapon-toting robots) can also be purchased for $9.99. Since it is free to check out, there is never any shortage of online matches.

Echo VR is available now for free on Oculus Rift and is coming soon to Oculus Quest. It was awarded our Best VR Competitive Fitness Game of the Year in both 2018 and 2019.

Glorious Noon

Glorious Noon is a free action game that has players using a variety of different melee weapons to take on enemies. These include broad swords that you’ll swing and throw around, spears to thrust, and a crossbow. Most of the weapons provide a solid arm workout and throwing the sword and watching it return to the player like a boomerang is a lot of fun. The game is currently in early access, but it’s worth checking out.

Glorious Noon is available now for free on Valve Index and HTC Vive.

Hardlight Blade has players using axes and lightsabers to defeat a number of robots. Unlike its Oculus Go counterpart, players can wield two weapons at once in this version. This makes the combat a lot more enjoyable and a better workout as both arms will get used. It’s a lot of fun for a free experience, although it is exclusive to select Oculus platforms.

Hardlight Blade is available now for free on Oculus Rift and Oculus Go.

Easily one of the best free VR fitness games is Hot Squat. As the name suggests, it revolves around doing squats and is one of the best leg workouts in virtual reality. Players will really feel the burn as they consecutively perform squats in order to clear barriers and they’re incentivized to top their high score. It’s a simple, yet effective, way to make squatting a more enjoyable workout. If you enjoy the free version, we recommend checking out Hot Squat 2: New Glory as well. It costs $6.99, but the proceeds go to charity and it has even more features.

Hot Squat is available now for free on Valve Index, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift. It has a fitness rating comparable to tennis by the VR Institute of Health and Exercise.

Piñata

As one can probably guess, Piñata is about beating the candy out of a durable piñata. To do this, players will be swinging their arms at the object while using a variety of tools. It can be a pretty decent arm workout if you’re not using a tool like the chainsaw. With a great sense of humor and a few surprises, this is well worth downloading.

Piñata is available now for free on Valve Index and HTC Vive.

Rec Room

Due to its branding as a social hub, some people might not realize that Rec Room is one of the best free VR fitness games. This is thanks to its diverse gameplay as it features a ton of different modes. The Rec Royale shooter mode is a lot of fun and has players ducking around cover in order to shoot other players, and the less intense Laser Tag and Paintball. Other recommendations include Soccer, which has players using their hands to push a giant  soccer ball down a field in order to try to score, and Rec Room Quests, which has players using weapons to get through enemy-filled dungeons.

Rec Room is available now for free on Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality, and PlayStation VR.

VR Jogger

Finishing off our list of the best free VR fitness games is VR Jogger. This can be solely an arm workout as it uses arm movement to move the player, but it’s a great experience if you jog in place instead. It doesn’t have the player running around the most exotic locations but the rural trail still beats jogging in your living room.

VR Jogger is available now for free on Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality.

Hopefully our list of the best free VR fitness games resulted in downloading a few new games without lightening your wallet and losing some calories along the way. It goes to show that you don’t always have to pay to experience a fun workout.
