New Releases: This Week In VR Fitness Games 6/18/18

QuiVr

QuiVr has made it out of early access on Steam and is now a fully released VR archery game. Play with a group in multiplayer or go co-op as a duo, or play a solo adventure and fling arrows at enemy targets by fighting with your own special abilities. Compete on the global leaderboards and stay motivated by making accurate distance shots and rapid-fire shots with your bow and arrow and healing teammates to work your way towards achievements.

Fitness Potential

Standing in one place isn’t going to give you much of a lower body workout, but when you shift your body weight from side to side, squat, and lunge to get away from attacks or damage, this will help. Archery games use a lot of upper body movement and will use one arm to hold up the bow and the other for the arrow, so you’ll want to switch up arms for balance or do bodyweight exercises like burpees for additional exercise.

Developer/Publisher: Blueteak/Alvios, Inc.

Release Date: June 18, 2018

Compatible with: HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality, with tracked controllers

Price: $15.99 to $19.99

Basketball Hero VR

This is an early access game. Play Basketball Hero VR for a chill game of basketball in 4 different courts: a standard basketball court, inside a crater, on an anti-gravity court, and in a bedroom with a basketball net on a door. There are different music choices that you can play as you challenge yourself against the clock, during a free throw session, or practice your dunking skills.

Fitness Potential

Shooting basketballs, free throwing, and jumping to catapult the ball into a virtual net are each going to give you a decent workout when you do repetitions quickly. There won’t be any racing up and down the court and passing with teammates, which would make this game great for cardio. To get better fat burn and cardio in this room scale game try running in place, butt kickers or side kicking in place in between b-ball practice will keep the heart rate up.

Developer/Publisher: Caleb Scott/Calebula Studios

SculptrVR

Art is good for the mind and body. Whether you’re using VR to make a realistic statue or a blob that’s supposed to be your dog, bending metal to create a funky structure, or painting a carefree doodle or a virtual Starry Night, anyone can create anything they put their mind to. Unwind after a long day or create something as your body recovers from an intense workout.

Fitness Potential

Creating detailed art, sculptures, and the like exercise the mind and help to deflate stress with art therapy. Over time stress will lower the immune system, but creating art in any way has been shown to strengthen the body’s defense system. Try creating something on a rest day when your body is recovering from going hard in the gym or in VR.
