New Releases: This Week in VR Fitness Games 10/16/17

Shoot some teddy bears and asteroids, or punch a robot in the face with this week's new VR releases.

Fall Fear Fly Redemption

Shoot approaching asteroids with your bow. Credit to: Lobaki

Lured by a siren song you’ll fall into a swirling whirlpool and into another world. In a race against time, you’ll be using a galaxy bow to aim and quickly hit approaching asteroids. The farther away the asteroids are the more points you’ll earn. Shoot other objects as they appear to unlock surprises.

Fitness Potential

Flinging arrows at asteroids uses the same muscle systems as archery. You’ll be using two halves of your body — one to hold the bow and one to let the arrows release. You’ll be using your upper body, core, and lower body together in quick sequences. This will be a good workout if you push yourself to go faster or lunge to get a better shot at destroying those falling stars.

Developer/Publisher: Lobaki

Release Date: October 16, 2017

Compatible with: HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, with tracked controllers

Price: $4.99

Sneaky Bears

Frank is an evil bear with an eyepatch who talks a lot of game and wants to kill you and take over the world. His team of bears will have you fighting for your life as you shoot them with various non-threatening nerf guns and weapons. A low-pressure option for people who want to play a fun shooter game without getting stressed out.

Fitness Potential

You’ll be shooting waves of various types of bears like pandas, football bears, and robotic bears. You’ll be using your upper body to aim and shoot guns, water guns, and even a freeze gun to defend yourself. There are two levels called Cuddly and Crazy, so you can fire up the difficulty level and get a faster-paced workout. Overall, it’s a fun kid appropriate and adult friendly shooter game.

Developer/Publisher: WarDucks

Release Date: October 17, 2017

Compatible with: HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR, with tracked controllers

Price: $9.74 to $14.99, $19.99

OVERTURN

You have amnesia and are trying to find out who you are and how you got to this laboratory. You’ll be solving some puzzles and fighting your way through waves of monsters, androids, and other futuristic enemies.  Defend yourself by using weapons like a beam rifle or your fists to fight off what’s attacking you.

Fitness Potential

Shoot, slice, and punch your way through waves of enemies with some help from your sidekick Magi. She’ll have special skills like a shield, time slow, item HP and will level up to Battle Magi to help you fight throughout your journey. It’s not clear how much time you’ll be fighting compared to solving puzzles, so the aerobic potential isn’t known.

VR Hockey League

Video Credit to: Vladislav Prygin

This hockey player tested game will take you to the ice and have you shooting hockey pucks in various challenges. Race against time to see how many goals you can make, or challenge yourself against a virtual goalie. See how many specialty shots you can make and get better accuracy.

Fitness Potential

Hockey uses your arms, core, and legs to swing a hockey stick and stabilize you as you take a shot or skate on the ice. You won’t be skating around in this game, but you will be hitting pucks in various challenges at different locations in the rink. If you have the room and overhead space to use a real hockey stick with a Vive Tracker, that would make the experience more immersive and would be good practice for beginners in the offseason.

Developer/Publisher: MadskillzVR

Release Date: October 18, 2017

Compatible with: HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, with tracked controllers

Price: $7.99 to $9.99

Fitness Potential

Combat Instinct is a combat game that uses your entire body to punch, shoot, and block your opponent. The description for this game says you can run by standing still and swinging your arms, which isn’t super aerobic like running in place would be, but still gets you moving and your heart pumping.
