This Week’s VR Game Roundup: Tetris, Plumbing, and Survival

During our last VR Game Roundup, there were a number of intriguing titles including some Oculus Quest ports of standout fitness games. This week isn’t necessarily packed, but it features a couple of worthwhile ports and some intriguing titles like Zen Universe.

Tetris Effect

Kicking off our VR Game Roundup is the critically acclaimed Tetris Effect. This trippy version of Tetris won game of the year awards when it initially released on PlayStation VR and is the best adaptation of the classic puzzle game in decades. Music and graphics truly come together to bring a memorable experience like no other.

Fitness Potential

While this isn’t a game you will be getting much of a workout playing, you will be able to use it to further your mental health and that is just as important. Players have used Tetris Effect in order to enter a trance-like state and meditate and it has a positive reputation as a stress reliever as a result. If you need something to chill down after a long day at work then this is it.

The Eastern Edge

The Eastern Edge is a first-person survival shooter that has players taking on rounds of enemies. Players have realistic 1940s-era guns and will have to manually reload each bullet. There’s no power-ups or regenerating health here, just the stress of trying to survive.

Fitness Potential

While this isn’t the greatest calorie burning game, there’s a good bit of movement as players attempt to reload regularly and the tense gameplay is sure to get your heart racing. Early reviews are very positive and the realistic edge helps it standout from the crowd.

Zen Universe

Another relaxing title in our VR Game Roundup is ZenART’s Zen Universe. It’s currently in Early Access and features two of four planned locations to get lost within. Currently you can check out the Belogradchik Rocks and Mount Olympus through its Tales of the Rocks and Olympus: Home of the Gods modes. The full version is coming this fall. There’s a history guide to help teach players about the areas they are in and it helps bring myths and legends to life.

Fitness Potential

Similar to Tetris Effect, Zen Universe isn’t a game that you’ll be playing to shed off a few extra pounds. Instead, it’s a relaxing and informative experience that allows players to get fully immersed in another world. A lot of work has gone into it and the detail really is stunning.

Mini Motor Racing X

Previously released on PlayStation VR, Mini Motor Racing X is a driving game that has players controlling miniature cars as they race through over-the-top courses. The career mode features over 50 tracks and there are plenty of upgrades to purchase with in-game currency. There’s also four-player online multiplayer matches to test your skills in and cooperative play for the co-op.

Fitness Potential

One nice thing is that Mini Motor Racing X gives you multiple ways to play, so you can go first-person inside the car or see a top-down view. However, one thing doesn’t change and that’s the fact that racing games are not much of a workout. Your heart might start beating a bit faster during an intense race but you won’t be burning many calories while playing.

Compatible With: Oculus Rift and Oculus Quest

Price: $24.99

Plumber

Finishing up this week’s VR Game Roundup is Plumber, which brings the classic puzzle of connecting water pipes to virtual reality. It’s a very basic idea for a game, but actually having to grab pipe pieces makes it more involved than you’d initially think.

Fitness Potential

There is some movement in Plumber as you have to physically crouch to reach pieces and then place them on the wall. However, there isn’t much here and this won’t be a good workout. It’s better to go with a game designed around fitness.
