This Week’s VR Game Roundup — A Clash on the Grid!

Grid Clash

Esports usually aren’t real sports in the traditional sense of the word, but that is where Grid Clash differs. The VR-exclusive game tasks you with shooting a ball through your opponent’s ring. They’ll try to stop you by slicing your body with discs, so we sure are glad it’s only VR. With the right finesse, you could become a virtually famous superstar!

Fitness Potential

Grid Clash was designed as an esport and a real sport, and it is easy to see why. You throw the balls and toss the rings much like you would in real life. Additionally, you have to physically run in place in order to move around the arena. You will almost never be standing still while playing against other people.

Developer/Publisher: Great Boolean

GameDevVR

Being a game developer isn’t all about sitting behind the computer, even when creating VR games. In GameDevVR, you create a VR title using pre-made stages. But the room you’re in is also your playground. Get upset? Throw a bottle. Make sure you keep eating in order to survive. You can move at your own pace, and try out the games you create.

Fitness Potential

One of the games you are able to make is a boxing simulation. As you might expect, this involves punching with the tracked motion controllers. You can also try out a bowling game, and there is a drum kit in the basement where you work. You can even bounce around a ping-pong ball to keep yourself entertained.

Developer/Publisher: Frederik Handberg/Fups

A second game set in a basement in one week? That has to be a record. In Little Awesome Dude, you live in a basement but create a VR world filled with fantasy creatures. Using your computer, you can purchase dungeons for your titular Little Awesome Dudes to complete. While they’re doing this, you’re free to mess around in the room.

Fitness Potential

Little Awesome Dudes gives you free rein over what you do in the basement. You can shoot basketball using the nearby hoop. You can also just club the crap out of your computer with a sledgehammer. You can also play darts using a board on the wall, should you want to mix things up.

Developer/Publisher: Canalside Studios

Release Date: September 5, 2019

Compatible With: Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index

Price: $6.99

The Lost

From the developers of Final Archer VR comes The Lost, a futuristic first-person shooter. With no memory of your past, you must escape from a facility while defeating soldiers. Weapons include pistols and submachine guns, and you can dual-wield them to deal maximum damage against your enemies. Only the most skilled will make it out alive.

Fitness Potential

The Lost is different from many other VR shooters in that it requires you to move for cover. If you see a piece of cover you want to hide behind, you must physically crouch. You can pop your head out to shoot at enemies, and this movement should get your legs working. You’re encouraged to move locations often, so you will be hiding behind different pieces of cover frequently.

Developer/Publisher: TOMATOVR

Release Date: September 5, 2019

Compatible With: Oculus Rift, HTC Vive

Price: $14.99

Elven Assassin (Quest)

Available on Oculus Quest for the first time, Elven Assassin is the ultimate defensive archery game for VR. You and up to three friends must defend your town against incoming orcs using your bows. They’ll take cover to avoid getting hit, so you’ll have to be quick with your shots. You can even hit them right in their dumb orc heads for extra flair.

Fitness Potential

As with most VR archery games, you use both tracked motion controllers for Elven Assassin. With one hand you hold the bow, while the other hand prepares an arrow and releases it. Doing this against waves of orcs is sure to get your blood pumping, particularly when some of them dodge your first shots. Once you get the hang of the rhythm, you should be able to pick them off more easily.

Developer/Publisher: Wenkly Studio

Release Date: September 5, 2019

Compatible With: Oculus Quest

Price: $14.99
