Humor and melee combat don’t generally go hand-in-hand, but that looks to be what PlatformaVR is offering with Mace and Grace. The new medieval combat game takes cute cartoon warriors and lets you literally tear them limb from limb with an arsenal of brutal weapons.
Incoming!
From the creators of destination VR experiences like The Arrival and The Poisoner, Mace and Grace is over-the-top, literally. Medieval knights are sent flinging toward you via trebuchets, and you must use a variety of weapons in order to defeat them. These include maces, axes, spears, and your bare hands, letting you vigorously flail your controllers as you cut down the enemy. More weapons will arrive in the future, as well.
The harder you hit knights, the more points you’ll earn. You’ll also be able to dodge bombs with “evasive maneuvering” to avoid taking damage.
The melee combat uses cartoon weapons and enemies, but it is nonetheless violent. Before enemies even touche the ground, you can swing your weapon and turn them into a bloody mess of limbs and heads. If facing multiple flying enemies at once, you swing both arms simultaneously. This can unlock a special “rage mode.” You can also just use your hands to pop off a head before tossing the body away. It’s like you’re an ogre out of a fantasy movie.
As you can see from the trailer, there’s a certain rhythm to the combat that almost resembles Beat Saber. The only different is that instead of abstract blocks, you’re slashing living, breathing warriors. That last one probably had a family. He was looking forward to seeing them after getting launched from the trebuchet!
Mace and Grace will be available on Steam Early Access beginning in May. The game will be available for the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Windows Mixed Reality.
